EMERGING ADULTS

Early adulthood is a period of great transition and an important stage in identity development. At times, this period may seem overwhelming or even scary. While most late teens are excited about the prospect of graduating from high school and moving on in life, whether it is to college or a job, it is also a time of rapid change and increasing responsibility. Entering adulthood is a time of leaving behind the familiar and taking on new challenges. During the period of time between graduating from high school on through one's twenties, many of our adult milestones will be accomplished: pursing a career and/or higher education, moving out of one's childhood home, paying those first bills, perhaps even getting married, starting a family, or buying a home. This period of change and development is probably not unlike the constant change and development of one's first years of life, but with out the same level of support. The decisions made during these years can often shape a person's future. That's where psychotherapy can help.

Therapy can be a safe and nonjudgmental place for those in this period of transition to sort through their choices and decisions, explore their identity, develop critical thinking and decision making skills, and establish their role as an adult (both in society and at home). I assist in this process by creating a neutral environment for open exploration and growth. I believe in providing the guidance and support that allows a person to independently determine what is the right path for them. I do not believe in telling one what to do, but in helping that person to become more in touch with who he/she is and what he/she wants out of life. Then together, we work on how to achieve those goals.
